Great feeder. It's heavy duty metal with a chain-link mesh siding to it. 100% black oil Sunflower seeds work very well in it (Cardinals love them), but a generic seed mix may not work as well if it has tiny little seeds because they will just fall out of the feeder. Larger seeds (like a cardinal berry/dried fruit mix) might not work either because the birds won't be able to pull the bigger chunks though the mesh. The roof is nice, it keeps the rain and snow off.

Bought this because Grackles, red wing blackbirds, and brown-headed cowbirds were consuming up to two pounds of black oil sunflower seed per day. The No/NO Red Cardinal Feeder controls this problem because the birds must extract the seed through the wire mesh. The old feeder had slots which acted like a coal chute! The reason the No/No feeder works is that it dramatically slows down the rate the blackish birds can extract seeds. These birds must also work harder too. I have very high hopes for the durability of this product as it is very well constructed from metal which is well painted and protected from rust. Do the Grackles still feed? Yes, but it is no big deal. The finches, cardinals, and sparrow varieties also feed from it. My problem is solved. This review is based on several weeks observation. I would buy this product again and recommend it to friends.

I'm very happy with this feeder! It's quite well-constructed out of good sturdy metal and is easy to refill. While we haven't had any cardinals the feeder is always busy with other happy little birds, including our resident family of Woody Woodpeckers. This feeder has become the centerpiece of our bird station, and I anticipate it will outlast all our other plastic feeders by years.

I love this feeder. I wanted something that cardinals would eat from because they were always bottom feeders and never ended up with much after the squirrels and chipmunks came through. I had this up for weeks and they wouldn’t use it. I finally put up another shepherds hook for this feeder to spread the birds out some. It took about a week or so but the cardinals finally started using it. I love watching them sit on it, eat and sing. It took awhile for them to find it and I think having two feeders so there weren’t so many birds vying for food did the trick because they seem to be shy. So happy! It holds so much seed and gets really heavy so make sure you have a strong hook for it. Definitely recommend!

This is the second one we bought as a replacement for the first one. It is very sturdy. The first one lasted five years. I think it would have lasted longer if not for the giant squirrel s that we have around here that loves eating out of these feeders. We don’t mind because we find the squirrels to be entertaining and clever in the way they try to get the seeds out. The birds love the feeder too.
